DIY Climbing Wall Instructions
Building a climbing wall at home is a fairly simple task with the right tools and guidance. In this post we give you the instructions to install climbing grips to a brick or concrete surface.
Building a Wall at Home - brick/concrete installations
These instructions show you how to install a vertical climbing wall (with no overhangs) straight to brick or concrete.
- Average grip coverage is 7 – 12 grips per square metre depending on who will be using the wall and the difficulty of the route set.
- For younger children more grips per square metre will make the grips closer together and easier to climb.
- For older children and adults less grips per square metre will make the grips further apart and more challenging to climb.
Materials & TOOLS REQUIRED
Materials:
Fittings:
- Cap Screws (1 per grip)
- Anchor Shields to anchor each cap screw (1 per grip)
Tools:
- Allan Key (to tighten cap screws).
- Impact Drill and masonry bit
Method:
- Drill one hole per grip in the wall, using the masonry bit.
- Make sure you drill straight.
- Remove sheath from the anchor. Place the Cap Screw through the grip and attach the sheath on the back of the cap screw. Stop when it touches the back of the grip (before it starts expanding).
- Place the shield with the cap screw into the hole and tighten the grip using the allan key.
NOTE: for thick plaster or very smooth walls, we suggest placing a small blob of “No More Nails” or similar on the back of the grip to stop it slipping.
